Montessori Week

We come together to celebrate Montessori Week and recognize the amazing contributions of Dr. Maria Montessori in the lives of children around the world.

Monday: Self

"The child has a mind able to absorb knowledge. He has the power to teach himself."
- Maria Montessori

We were visited by a dentist who shared with us how to keep our teeth healthy and clean. Some of the children had the opportunity to make self portraits.

Tuesday: Cultural

"The whole of mankind is one and only one, one race, one class and one society."
- Maria Montessori

In the morning, Ms. Kim gave us a lesson on the origins and traditions of the celebration of Mardi Gras. The children were able to pick out a bead necklace to keep and make Mardi Gras masks. In the afternoon, Ms. Citlalli gave us a lesson about China.

Wednesday: Community

"We shall walk together on this path of life, for all things are part of the universe and are connected with each other to form one whole unity."
- Maria Montessori

The children had a great time listening to the firemen about what they do and seeing the lights on the fire truck. They also enjoyed listening to one of our parents give a musical performance with her violin.

Thursday: Environment

"The land is where our roots are. The children must be taught to feel and live in harmony with the Earth."
- Maria Montessori

The middle school students shared their research with us about the Primary classroom pets. There is a tree frog, bearded dragon, beta fish, two hermit crabs, and two red-eared sliders. We also talked about how we can take care of the environment. In the afternoon, the children walked around the campus and helped picked up trash that was on the ground.

Friday: Peace

"Peace is what every human being is craving for, and it can be brought about by humanity through the child."
- Maria Montessori

We began our day by creating peace bracelets and every bead represents a petal from our peace flower. The children learned about different peacekeepers, including Maria Montessori, and how they can be a peacekeeper.
